i do serge, jessica. I am still trying to figure out my serger...it is a very intimidating and intriguing machine, but I love it.
If you don't have a serger, just do a tight-ish zig-zag stitch along both edges of your strip of fabric {2-3 times the length you need it to be to go around your bag} and then do a loose baste stitch down the middle of the strip. You can tighten the tension on your bobbin stitch if you want it to bunch as you sew, but I like doing that myself. So once I've basted down the middle, I pull {gently} on one of the strings {only one} and it bunches up real nice.
Then I use fabric glue stick to stick it onto the bag where I want it, and sew it on for real. Then you have to go back and remove the baste stitch.
ooooh fabric glue stick! where can i find me one of those? and do you do a rolled hem, 3 thread, or 4 thread edge? i just used a 4 thread becuase i am lazy and thats how it already was.
I think I'm going to try it... once I finish sewing the binding onto my most recent quilt. I make a lot of bags (as gifts as such) but ruffles would DEFINITELY make them better. Thanks for the little how-to. :)

How do you do it? Do you just surge the edges and then... bunch it as you sew? I'm jealous if you own a surge machine.
