diaper strap tutorial.

I've had a number of emails lately asking for ideas on quick and easy baby gifts. You know, the kind you can give a new mom with a little note of well wishes and wipes, without the fanfare of showers and gift receipts. My answer is, the diaper strap.

I think we're kinda steering away from the big vinyl chunky diaper bags, and moving more towards a modern disguised looking baby bag. Especially for those quick trips where you don't necessarily need to haul the baby tub and loofahs. I love the strap idea because it's enough to carry the essentials - a couple diapers and the wipes - and it keeps them strapped together tight and stylish in your own handbag; AND dad can carry it to the changing room without wearing a purse. You're welcome guys.

So here it is:

Check out these totally cute diaper cakes from ediapercakes.com.  They'd be such a good idea for a baby shower table centerpiece.  Love 'em.

  2. You are like a blogging enrichment leader...oh yeah, you are a blogging enrichment leader. he he

I love my diaper strap...never want to make one...hope mine lasts a while.

I would hate to have to send LG to the bathroom with a purse. Yeah right...like he ever changes diapers at church anymore.

  3. Ah... Muslin is, like, the secret ingredient!
Great idea, I'm all about simplifying!
Once, when Cougar was a baby, I collapsed in the church parking lot with a baby in a car seat on one arm, the diaper bag, my church bag (was RS secretary at the time), my scriptures and my purse in the other.
My scriptures are now located on my iphone, that is located in my purse with the lone diaper - that darn well better get us through : ).

  5. Okay...so I didn't win the drawing :(, but I did pay JoAnn's a visit today. I stocked up on all the supplies needed to make a diaper strap for Miss Lydia Grace. I hope it turns out as cute as the one you made. I doubt it (you have the magic touch), but here goes...

Oh...I almost forgot. I hear the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and Miss Dani has made her own private blog. I would love to be able to see it. :)

  6. I don't have muslin, do you think fusible interface will do the trick? Is it just for making it thicker?

  8. This is another pointless thing a mom will use once and never use again. Seriously.

  11. i think this is fabulous and perfect for when you want to celebrate a birth, which all should be, but are on tight funds. thank you for the tutorial, i'm sorry someone was having a rough day and thought it was pointless...i love it and might have to trade in my diaper clutch for this less bulky option

  14. just whipped this up ( and i'm pretty much sewing illiterate) for a friend this afternoon, on a whim with what i could find to use at my home. turned out super cute - thanks for a wonderful tutorial & idea!!

  15. thank you! i loved your diaper strap tutorial. this was one of my first sewing projects and it turned out great! i made mine using a plaid fabric and instead of the button i sewed on a homemade muslin flower. i will be making these for every baby shower i attend from now on.

  16. o by the way...... seriously not pointless!! I often throw a diaper, my wipes case, and a bottle in my purse when i go into a store or resteraunt and i dont feel like lugging the diaper bag in. now it will be neat and tidy :) thanks for sharing

  17. I like it! Only thing is that I'd make it just a little longer to fit a cloth diaper. Cloth diapers are a little puffier than a disposables because the microfiber is thicker than plastic..

  22. I love this! Although I'm wondering if you have any tips about sewing the button through the velcro? I made two of these and found sewing on the button to be the most frustrating part of it. I'm very new to the sewing world so I'd appreciate any advice! Thank you for this great idea--they were a big hit at my siter in laws baby shower!

  25. Such a thrifty idea! I need 4 of them in the next couple of months to pair with covered wipe cases and pacifier clips. These mommy's will love them!

PS...I use mine ALL the time! Even inside my diaper bag, it keeps all the diapers nice and stacked instead of getting that one that always get squished down in to the corner of the bag.

  26. Do I have to use Muslin or can I use something else? I don't have any on hand and would love to try make on today =)

    1. You can use any fabric. I use Muslim because it's cheap and I don't care that it's covered up. Don't use something as thick as duck cloth or canvas because it doesn't bend as well. And something like a thin broadcloth is just too thin to stabize it enough. Any medium weight cotton will do!

  28. Great idea!! I have 2 nieces expecting and am always looking for homemade gift ideas to go with store bought gifts. I made a cloth yoyo to use instead of the button. Thanks for the great tutorial!!

  29. I'm scouring the scrap bin as I type this! I'm going on vacation with my baby for a family wedding and I REFUSE to use my nasty, bulky, falling apart diaper bag and this will be perfect for keeping the wipes and diapers handy in my purse and a quick grab for those inevitable runs to the bathroom changing table!
For those that think this is a waste.... a waste is the $70 diaper bag I was given that didn't even last a year. If this only lasts the 3 day weekend who cares? it'll cost pennies and will save me some sanity for this outing.

  32. I came across this tutorial almost a year ago when I was Googling to find something to keep my diapers and wipes together. I was at the point where I didn't always carry a diaper bag and I hated diapers and wipes floating around my purse or car. This tutorial is so great! I've been using my strap for at least 9 or 10 months and get so many compliments on it! It goes to the gym daycare, to my MIL's house when I drop the kids off for a couple of hours, and everywhere else we go. I've also now made 4 of them for showers and the new moms always rave about how creative they are. Thanks again!

  37. Hi! I love this and am trying to make one for a gift for a friend's baby shower. I'm having a hard time sewing through the Velcro - has anyone else had problems with it? I have an old sewing maching so that could be the problem too, but any advice would be great! Thanks!

  38. I love the simplicity. I sewed the velcro before I sewed the sides. This made it easier to sew through and you don't see the stitches. I made one for my sister who is always forgetting her nappy bag. Thanks for the great ideas.

  43. Nice Idea! Only thing I think I would do different is make sure the "hook side" of the velcro is the inside of the strap, meaning the side with the button on it. That way if some velcro peaks out, no one gets scratches, and also less likely the that velcro will get full of lint. Thanks for the idea!
